The Armdale rotary improvements (Halifax, NS) demonstrate the subtleties of U.K. design based on research of capacity and safety relationships to six geometric design elements. Capacity was added to this five leg rotary that operates with >5,000 vehicles per hour such that long am and pm queues were reduced considerably without changing the number of lanes of all but one entry. Safety performance was also improved with the combination of geometry, sophisticated pavement stripes, pavement arrows and navigation signs. ORC and ORE are involved in several of this kind of rehabilitation projects throughout North America.
